Heh… My England-born grandmother told me about this one.

When teams of workmen had to travel away from home to a work site (railway laying, mining, lumberjacks, etc) they’d usually have temporary housing nearby. In the mornings, a supervisor would have the job of walking around knocking on doors with a stick to wake the workers up for the day; thus, “knocking up”.

Frankly, the US-English use of the phrase is harder to make sense of. Been trying to find an explanation or origin for it without success.
